whale and dolphin watching
Humpack whales start to arrive around the Big Island in mid-December, where they mate and give birth, before returning to Alaska in the spring. They are here in greatest number from the beginning of January through March, with some mother-calf pairs still lingering in April. To see their acrobatic displays from the boat, or hear their breath when they surface for air, is an experience to remember for a lifetime. Listening to their song by hydrophone, or while swimming alongside the boat, is another treat, as the water comes to life with sound.
Hawaii's spinner dolphins feed off-shore at night, and come into shallow bays to rest during the day. They often come to Maile as we sail out of the harbor during spring, fall and summer months. To watch them play off the bow, or play with a whale, is a great delight.
