World Tour 2024-25, Leg 10
Cape Town, St Helena, Cabedelo (Brazil)
7th January – 6th February 2024, 3,600nm
The Southern Atlantic in January is a pure joy: gentle swells, steady breeze and no squalls. In 2018 this was a magic carpet leg!
Joining in Cape Town, we head west to Brazil via St Helena. We will have a few days at this mid Atlantic British outpost. St Helena is one of the most remote islands, making it one of the hardest countries to visit. Until recently it involved a 5 day sea journey on the Royal Mail ship and although there is now a (controversial) airport it's not a major destination.
Romantically one has to sail there and the reward is a cute little 'English' town, complete with a pub, fish and chip shop and a Royal Mail post office. Little grocery shops including a butchers and a bakery are reminiscent of 1950s Britain and are surrounded by unspoilt countryside. The main tourist attractions are the house where Napoleon was exiled, a long stair case (Jacob's Ladder) and a resident whale shark. It's a gem of a place.
Sailing on to Brazil in the steady south-east tradewinds promises to be a perfect way to dodge the winter. It just so happens we arrive in time for Carnival, and no one does it better than South America.
